U.S. Humanitarian Mission Personnel Participate in Festival of Black Culture

It was a day of celebration for U.S. personnel participating in the Continuing Promise 2010 (CP2010) mission who successfully completed ten days of humanitarian work and had the opportunity to participate in Limon’s Festival of Black Culture. August 31st marks Dia del Negro (Black Day) where Limoneses celebrate their African roots with music, dance, traditional food, colorful costume and a parade that had every street throughout the Limon center of town packed with onlookers. U.S. Ambassador and Costa Rican Government Delegation See Benefits of Continuing Promise Humanitarian Mission

U.S. Ambassador Anne Andrew traveled to the Limon province with a Costa Rican delegation headed by Foreign Minister Rene Castro to learn first-hand about the humanitarian work being carried out as part of Continuing Promise 2010. Commodore Tom Negus welcomed the delegation aboard the USS Iwo Jima where they got a tour of the facilities and were briefed on the numerous projects U.S. personnel, Costa Rican officials, NGOs and volunteers are engaging in within the local community. Local Nutritional Center Benefits from Humanitarian Assistance Project

Sophia Pinel Ramirez, Director of the Talamanca regional office of CEN CINAE, a country-wide organization that focuses on nutritional health care for children and expecting mothers, expressed her gratitude for the recent humanitarian assistance provided by the U.S. Taking advantage of the expertise of US Navy Sea Bees aboard the USS Iwo Jima who are in Costa Rica as part of the Continuing Promise 2010 humanitarian mission, officials from the Office of Defense Representative at US Embassy San Jose were able to get a team of engineers to do reconstruction work at the local CEN CINAE office in Bri Bri. The Navy Sea Bees worked with local staff from the Ministry of Health for seven days to improve the office space. More information

Free medical and dental care, veterinarian attention, the refurbishing of
schools along with cultural and sports activities are all part of the
humanitarian assistance that Continuing Promise 2010 will be providing as of
today in the Limon province.
The official opening ceremony of this humanitarian mission was led by
U.S. Ambassador Anne S. Andrew; USS IWO JIMA ship Commodore Tom Negus - the
ship that brought the Continuing Promise to Costa Rica -; Vice-minister
Mauricio Boraschi; the Mayor of Limon Eduardo Barboza; Costa Rican Social
Security representative Dr. Robert Sawyer; and JAPDEVA Executive President

Continuing Promise 2010

Continuing Promise (CP) 2010 is a humanitarian mission that will bring health care and other relief services to the residents of Limon City and Limon Province from August 20-30 2010. CP 2010 is a four-month humanitarian and civic assistance deployment by the multi-purpose amphibious squadron ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) that is providing assistance in eight countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. CP 2010 is a joint effort that reflects the commitment to pursue innovative interagency, multinational, NGO and public-private engagement opportunities focused on delivering quality medical and engineering assistance to regional communities with humanitarian needs. U.S. Ambassador Anne S. Andrew visited the province of Limon in order to gain a better understanding of its economic and social reality, as well as the existing opportunities to work together on common goals.
The Costa Rica Grameen Association was the first place Ambassador Andrew visited. There Ambassador Andrew met with women entrepreneurs in the poultry and farm industry, handicrafts and the restaurant business. More
