New Project Protects Migrant's Labor Rights in Costa Rica, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic

San Jose-February 23, 2010

Under Chapter 16 of the CAFTA-DR bill, the U.S. Department of State will support a comprehensive labor rights project which will focus on Costa Rican, Dominican and Salvadorian workers.

The initiative, ‘Promoting a Culture of Enforcement of Migrant Labor Rights: Consciousness, Capability Development and Technical Support in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador,’ is being implemented by the TRUST Foundation, the Department of Social Development and Employment of the OAS in the three countries and will be carried out over the course of a two-year period.

U.S. Ambassador Anne S. Andrew attended the event and highlighted that “foreigners come to our countries searching for better life conditions and frequently they find themselves in vulnerable situations, especially in the work place. They rarely know their rights under labor laws, or what recourse they have if they are abused. It is here where, as governments, we must pay attention in order to protect migrants labor rights.”
