Ambassador Anne Andrew Swears In 53 Peace Corps Volunteers

San Jose – May 21, 2010

“During 49 years, more than 200,000 Volunteers from the United States of America have left their country to dedicate two years of their lives to live and work with citizens of other countries in development projects, education, health, agriculture, natural resources, and others.” With these words, U.S. Ambassador Anne Andrew officiated the Swearing In of 53 new Peace Corps Volunteers who will spend the next two years in communities throughout Costa Rica working under projects involving Children, Youth and Families, Community Economic Development, and Rural Community Development. The new Volunteers,

The new Volunteers, ages 22 – 33, hail from 27 U.S. States, and will be serving in 53 distinct communities throughout Costa Rica ranging from the farthest southern border town of Paso Canoas to Limon, the Central Valley, the Nicoya Peninsula, the Pacific coast, and the far north border region with Nicaragua in Los Chiles. Working in partnership with national and local counterpart agencies such as PANI, DINADECO, FINCA, Junior Achievement, and others, Volunteers will define priority development projects in their sectors that will benefit their communities. At the same time, all Volunteers will engage in intercultural exchange to strengthen the peaceful and friendly relations that have existed for years between the United States of America and Costa Rica.
