U.S. Ambassador Anne S. Andrew visited the province of Limon in order to better understand its economic and social situation, as well as the potential for opportunities to work together on common goals.

The Costa Rica Grameen Association was the first Ambassador's first stop. There, Ambassador Andrew met with women entrepreneurs in the poultry and farm industry, handicrafts and the restaurant business. She emphasized that women who own small businesses contribute both to their families and communities, and that the Grameen bank model of micro credit is a vital partner in helping them take their first steps toward commercial success.  Facilitating access to credit for previously marginalized groups is a vital part of the Obama Administration's goal of promoting economic growth with social inclusion throughout the hemisphere.

Ambassador Andrew also visited the Mayor Lynch Public Library where the Library’s Director, Margaret Simpson, introduced her to the resources available to the public at the American Corner and the Intelligent Community Center (CECI), both housed at the library. At the American Corner, the Ambassador read English language stories to the students of the Bilingual Caribbean School.

Next stop was the Limon Rotary Club where the Ambassador shared ideas about community development projects that could be jointly developed.

At the Limon Civic Ethnic Committee, the Ambassador learned more about the Afro-Caribbean background and population of the region, and their important contributions to Costa Rica.

During her second day in Limon, Ambassador Andrew visited the Moin and Limon ports in order to gather first-hand information on the ports day-to-day operations, and see first-hand where the USS Iwo Jima will dock to carry out its humanitarian mission from August 20-30.

Ambassador Andrew concluded her tour with a visit to the Science High School of Limon where she delivered a donation of more than 100 books and had the opportunity to talk about a variety of topics with students, especially the importance of science and technology in Costa Rica's continued sustainable development.

At the end of her two-day visit to Limon, Ambassador Andrew said she was very impressed with the talent of the students and women entrepreneurs, as well as with the contribution of the many community groups to the province. “The growth and development opportunities are numerous and evident in Limon. We will definitely look for more opportunities to work together,” the Ambassador emphasized.
