Ambassador Emphasizes Regional Cooperation in Fighting Narcotrafficking
San Jose, September 16, 2010
At her September 16 press conference, Ambassador Andrew reemphasized the need for Central American countries to work together to interdict, disrupt, and dismantle the narcotrafficking cartels that have increased their use of Costa Rican land, waters, and airspace to move their drugs to the U.S.
This year, for the first time, Costa Rica was included on the Majors List, the U.S. Presidential Determination that reports to Congress on major illicit drug transit or producing countries. The Ambassador underlined to San Jose’s major print, radio, and television journalists that listing Costa Rica as a major transit country is “neither a criticism nor a failing grade”.
It is a description of the seriousness of the situation,” and that, “...the U.S. Government will renew its focus on Costa Rica’s unique requirements to better protect its territory from drug and criminal cartels, and on looking for ways to leverage those solutions with regional partners.”
